Why Consider Emlid over Other RTK Options?

Compare the cost of Emlid to the cost of Upgrading your Ag GPS to RTK

We talk to many farmers who are very happy with the accuracy they get with their autosteer. They have purchased their auto guidance hardware from a major manufacturer, pay a reasonable annual subscription (or even get it for free) to get 4-6″ accuracy, and don’t feel they need anything more. However, when they consider drainage and water management, this level of accuracy probably won’t cut it. In fact, the vertical accuracy of GPS can be as much as double that of horizontal, so that 4-6″ becomes more like 8-12″. Not great if you are tiling or creating surface drains!

So they go back to their equipment dealer to get a quote on RTK. To their amazement, they first need to ‘unlock’ their receiver to be able to use RTK at all. That’s a few thousand dollars for a QR code or a short text message. Then, they may need to purchase either a radio or a cellular modem to get the corrections into their GPS – another several thousand dollars. In many cases, they will also need to buy a base station to broadcast the RTK corrections to their receiver – tens of thousands of dollars!

Don’t get us wrong. For some farms, it makes sense to go this route because of the value RTK can bring to the farm. Consider the reduction in input overlap and your ability to plant or seed exactly where you want to. We want to provide options. Upgrading existing equipment is definitely a great option for some. However, for many, we’ve learned that farmers would prefer a simple, low-cost alternative. An RTK system they could use for drainage work, and possibly to do some field mapping, or take a few shots around the farm to check elevations, measure areas, or mark important locations accurately.

We’ve tried and tested many options, but never been confident to bring them to market. It’s taken us 10 years working with Emlid products to finally be confident that this is a viable alternative solution that we are willing to stand behind. So if you decide it makes the most sense for you not to upgrade your existing autosteer to RTK, consider us and consider Emlid. You might find another company selling them online for a few dollars less than we do. But we’d wager they don’t have the background and knowledge that we do using the products in precision agriculture.

The Ideal RTK Solution for Tile Plow Grade Control

"I worked extensively with Emlid products when they first launched back in 2014. I even had some input into their early development! At that time, their technology of low-cost RTK was revolutionary, but came with many tradeoffs when it came to reliability. Emlid has come a long way since then. The RS2 and now RS3 receivers impress me every time I use them. Super simple to setup via the app, and most importantly, they just work. I've worked with a lot of RTK systems from most of the mainstream brands, with most costing 5 to 10 times the price of Emlid. There's just no way I would ever buy one of those brands now when I could buy a tilt-compensated RS3 for literally a fraction of the price.
